Painting in Pastels

In this class, we will explore the medium of pastels to create vibrant and luminous paintings. In addition to learning the techniques of painting in pastel, students will experiment with using expressive color in a variety of subject matter, with a concentration on landscapes. The principles of composition, design, value and color will be integrated in all sessions and the care and framing of pastel paintings will be explained. Beginning and more experienced students are welcome! Limit 10 students.

Do you want to improve your writing skills for work? Write a poem to your beloved or finish that family memoir? Or maybe you have considered writing a script? If so, come join us for this 6-week writer's workshop where we will explore a variety of writing genres. In this session, we will be taking some time to address the concepts of Time and Place in our stories, poems, and plays. More specifically, how do they impact the scenes that unfold and the images we create, in both our earliest, developing rough drafts and in our more polished, almost-final revisions?

Knitting for Beginners*

This introductory class will get you started with the basics of knitting. You will learn about straight, double point, and circular needles. You will learn to cast on stiches, the basic knit and purl stiches, and how to read a pattern. There will be several handouts at the beginning of class. The first thing we will make is a basic dishcloth. Then we will move on to a cowl and other projects as time allows. A supply list will be sent to you once there are enough students for a class. Cost will be about $20 and should be purchased before the first class. Storm makeup will be April 15. Limit 10 students.

Rug Hooking for Beginners*

Would you like to learn the art of North American rug hooking in an easy going, relaxed environment that encourages modern interpretations? You will make one of your choice from the instructor’s 6" x 6" patterns. The Adult Ed secretary will be in touch by email prior to class to note your pattern preference which are available on our website. The titles of the artwork are Maine Mountains, Hippie Bus, Peace on Earth, and Shaker Heart. The session will include an introduction to hooking including some history of the craft, an overview of styles, how to choose hooking wools and other materials, tools, a few rules, tips and tricks, and getting started on the projects. Finishing instructions will also be demonstrated! Materials Fee $85 cash or check at the beginning of class and includes: hook, 12" hoop, 6" x 6" pattern hand drawn on high quality rug warp, all wool needed to complete the pattern, printed instructions, ongoing access to the instructor for questions after class. Please bring a bag lunch, as we will break about noon for a short indoor picnic. Storm make up will March 29; please reserve this date on your calendar when you register--just in case we have a spring snowstorm. Limit 10 students.

Needle Felting: Make a Gnome*

Come learn the basics of needle felting and make an adorable gnome about 6 inches tall that will fit in the palm of your hand! This course is designed for beginners, and those with needle felting experience are welcome. Fiber color options will be available to choose from, so you can customize your gnome to your liking. Materials Fee $15.00 to the instructor at the beginning of the class—cash or check. All materials will be provided. Storm make up date will be April 12, please mark your calendar just in case. Limit 10 students.

Ukrainian (Pysanka) Egg Decorating*

The Pysanka, a decorated egg, was common among Slavic people as far back as 5,000 BC and was an important spring ritual. When decorating eggs in the Ukrainian style, designs are drawn on the egg with melted beeswax, which flows from a tool called a Kystka. The eggs are then dipped in a series of dyes and the final pattern is revealed when the wax is removed. Please bring reading glasses, if you use them. The instructor would like to encourage young people in this art form. Ages 8 to 16 are welcome to register with their participating parent or guardian. For a single adult Materials Fee is $20 and is payable to the instructor cash or check at the start of class. Families will be $20 per adult plus $5 per child. A storm make up will be April 12 from 10 to 12:30. When you register please reserve this time slot just in case of snow or slippery road conditions. Limit 18 students.
