Pottery: Make a Clay Fish*

Join us for a fish-making class—which will be ready just in time for a Mother’s or Father’s Day gift and to celebrate Maine’s open water fishing season! You will learn how to put the fish together on the first night. Then you will paint him on April 16. After the second firing you will be able to pickup your artwork at the Adult Ed office at Messalonskee on or about April 30. There is a $30 materials fee, cash or check, to the instructor at the start of class to cover the cost of clay, glaze, and firing. Storm dates may affect this schedule. Limit 10 students. 2 Meetings, April 2 AND April 16

Twining: An Introduction*

Twining involves twisting two fixable strands called wefts around each other to enclose vertical strands called warps. It’s the use of two wefts and twisting them together to enclose the warps that distinguishes twining from normal weaving. To get started with twining we will make a placemat. The first night will be setting up, second night will be trouble shooting and problem solving, then on the last night we will finish up our placemats and take them off the loom. Bring scraps or leftovers cotton or cotton blend fabric that look good together and can be torn into long strips. Looms will be provided at a nominal cost—TBD. Limit 10 students

Make Your Best Shot: An Introduction to Digital Photography*

In this one-night class participants will learn the basics of digital photography: what you should have read in your owner’s manual--but didn’t! Topics covered include camera settings, understanding exposure and white balance, tips for making your best shots of various subjects. It’s a perfect session to attend BEFORE going on a vacation, so you can bring home your very best shots. Limit 20 students

Dichroic or Fused Glass Jewelry Making*

In this class, you will choose between Dichroic Glass or Fused Glass Jewelry:

Dichroic Glass students will create a unique, beautiful jewelry set that reflects light by stacking metal oxides together.

Fused Glass students will place pieces of glass together to create two sets of pendants, pins, and earrings.

View the instructor's original art on our website at midmaine.maineadulted.org. The Messalonskee Site Office will notify you when you can come to pick up your finished artwork—the target date is May 1.

Dichroic Glass Students: There is a $95 materials fee, separate from the registration fee, due to the instructor in check or cash at the start of class.

Fused Glass Students: There is a $50 materials fee, separate from the registration fee, due to the instructor in check or cash at the start of class.

Jewelry Making: Tree of Life Pendant / Intermediates*

Create a beautiful piece of jewelry for yourself or craft the perfect Mother’s Day gift in this hands-on jewelry making experience! We will make a 2-inch copper wire-wrapped Tree of Life Pendant and matching earrings. There will be a $30 Materials Fee which will cover the cost of the wire and stones and is payable to the instructor (cash or check) at the beginning of class. Once we have enough students for the class you will receive a Supply List via email from the Adult Ed secretary. Pictures of the jewelry and tools you will need to buy will be on our webpage at midmaine.maineadulted.org. Limit 10 students.

Basket Making with Bittersweet Vine*

The so-called “oriental” or round leaf bittersweet is a creeping vine with inedible berries that is considered invasive in North America. It is a frustrating plant for gardeners and arborists, and it isn't very popular with birds either. But in this class we will make a traditional basket from its vines. We will cover identification, responsible collection, processing, and storage. We will cover the basics of stake-and-strand twining, and weaving to create a basket that you will cherish for many years to come. Limit 10 students.

Are you a photographer looking to increase your client's comfortability? Are you a frequent picture taker, looking to have better engagement when taking photos with friends & family? We all have our picture taken at one point or another in our lives, and if we're not comfortable in the moment it's taken...that shines through. This class will focus is to increase your comfortability both in front of the camera and while being behind it. Required supplies: a mindset of learning and a camera if you own one, cellphone cameras are okay! Let's create more smiles and better photographs together!
