There is a special need for people who can care for infants and toddlers - while also supporting the reunification process, sibling groups, and adolescents. Bee Keeping for Beginners Messalonskee W19

This beginner bee-keeping course will educate those interested in getting involved with BEES. Some of the discussion will be about assembling bee equipment, installing a nuc, controlling swarming, and dealing with varroa mites. Other topics will be how and when to harvest HONEY, split hives, and winterize the bees. A $50 material fee is payable to the instructor at the start of class. The fee will cover the cost of book and free membership for one year to the Kennebec or Somerset Bee Keepers Clubs. Limit 25 students.

Beginner to Intermediate Horsemanship W19

Learn horse handling and horsemanship skills in a positive atmosphere. This “hands-on” course is designed for those who are planning to become new horse owners or have recently become new horse owners without prior experience. Students will be paired or grouped up, depending on class size, and assigned a horse for hands-on instruction. Students will learn safe handling, proper positioning around the horse, training techniques in reference to groundwork, general equine facts on health and safety and proper tacking up and fit. Students will need a digital thermometer, boots with a heel (or hiker style high tops shoes) and optional leather gloves. Student limit 8

The class will be offered in three modules. Students may take one or all three modules. Each module will meet once a week for five sessions and is independent of the other modules. This allows students to take one or more of the modules over the course of the semester. Each completed module earns a student one-third credit towards a high school diploma. Community members are always welcome and encouraged. No class Feb. 19, and Apr. 16.

The purpose of this course is to give students the basics of math while exploring financial literacy. During this course, students will learn to perform operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Additionally, they will gain a greater understanding of the financial issues that affect their lives now: budgeting money, understanding a paycheck, buying a car and choosing a credit card. Students will also be introduced to financial topics that they will encounter in the years to come as they finish school and enter the workforce. Mortgages, rent, insurances, utilities, groceries, entertainment, investing, and saving for retirement will be topics in this course. This course is offered to students earning a high school diploma as well as the general public. Limit 15 students. No class Feb. 20, and Apr. 17.
