Singers of all experience levels are invited to join in singing folk songs, spirituals, rounds, pop songs and more. All ages are welcome, but children 6 -15 must be accompanied by an adult. Christina Spurling holds a masters degree in collaborative piano performance and loves bringing people together to make music. We are pleased to offer two separate sessions this semester. Meet your instructor

Christina Spurling earned the Master of Music degree in collaborative piano performance from the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, MA. As a Longy Presidential Scholar, Christina studied accompanying, chamber music and opera with Brian Moll. She has served as rehearsal pianist for the Boston Opera Collaborative, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and the Bagaduce Chorale. She performed with the Cape Ann Symphony, as accompanist for the Newburyport Candlelight Chorale, Acadia Choral Society and as a soloist with the Bagaduce Chorale. With a passion for community and musical collaboration, Christina founded the Quietside Chamber Music Festival in the summer of 2018 on Mount Desert Island, featuring local Maine-based musicians. The series also includes a youth ensemble which she facilitates and coaches. Christina is a piano instructor and collaborative pianist at Colby College.

Develop skills to enhance your recording, mixing, and mastering. Bring your cell phone, laptop, 4 track recorder to learn and advance your recording, mixing and mastering skills. All ages and levels of knowledge are welcome! Prerequisite: DIY Recording Level 1  or Instructor approval.

Alex Fulton is a music producer and the founder of music-driven media production company Fulton Street Media Group. He has 15 years of professional experience producing records with artists and custom music for Film, TV, and Advertising, and represents a roster of 80+ artists from around the country. He has placed music on TV shows for CBS, Showtime, Netflix and BET, and in commercials for Nike, Google, Mazda, John Deere, Nature Valley, Ralph Lauren, and more.

His current focus is on the ways music encodes and recalls memory and evokes emotion, and how that can be harnessed for health and wellness, education, storytelling, and business.

Fiddling for Beginners

All ages of beginners are welcome! This class will mainly focus on fiddles. This class is for Suzuki Students who are beginners through book 1, or have studied privately for a year or less. Other instruments, such as guitar, mandolin, banjo, or cello are encouraged to participate and will receive guidance. The class will culminate on the final meeting by providing music for a community contra dance.

Meet Your Instructor

Deirdre Wood Becher is a Celtic fiddler and dancer.  Deirdre performs with Celtic Spring and Hidden Fifth a quartet that brings energy and youthful exuberance to a new generation of folk music tradition reaching back through family roots. Deirdre works and lives at First Step Farms with her husband and two children.

This class is perfect for learners of all ages who study violin, viola or cello and know at least “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” from memory through the end of Suzuki  Book 1. Memorizing pieces is encouraged in order to enjoy various games playing together beautifully!!!

Meet Your Instructor

Lori Scheck grew up in Endicott, New York, and began playing violin at the age of 8. After her first year of lessons in public school, she began taking private lessons and studied the Suzuki method until the age of 18. After moving to Maine in her early 20’s she took a 14 year hiatus from playing the violin. After some child rearing and other major life changes, she resumed playing violin in late 2001. She has studied privately with Steve Kecskemethy, principal violinist of the Portland String Quartet. Lori attended Suzuki teacher training classes for Suzuki instruction at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, Hart Music School in Hartford, Connecticut, and Stanford University in Paolo Alto, California. Lori is an active board member of the Maine Suzuki Association and is a certified Music Together teacher.  She is also a member of the Colby College Symphony Orchestra in Waterville, ME. Occasionally, she plays piano trios and string quartets with other area musicians. In her spare time, Lori enjoys playing violin and cello duets with her husband for public events and just for fun.

This class starts at the beginning of music theory and serves as a great intro to music notation. Students will learn to read notes in the staff, how to read and understand rhythms, counting, and time signatures, common dynamic marks and articulations, and sharps, flats, and naturals. The class will consist of instruction as well as written exercises to do together, ear training exercises to put the concepts into practice, and homework so the students can review what was covered at home. No experience necessary! For students age 8 to adult.

Meet your instructor

Katie Little grew up in the shore town of Highlands, NJ. She has received her Bachelors in Music Performance from The College of New Jersey, and her Master’s in Woodwind Performance from New York University. From a young age, Katie knew she wanted to be a teacher and has now been teaching music lessons for over 10 years.

She had the privilege of teaching with The Calderone School of Music in New Jersey for 5 of those years where she helped students prepare for auditions, competitions, and exams. When the pandemic hit, she started teaching lessons remotely and was able to help students from all over the country to reach their musical goals. She has had the pleasure of performing with many groups over the years such as The Glen Rock Pops and New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra.

She currently plays with the Augusta Symphony and the Colby Orchestra as a mentor. Katie uses a very supportive and positive teaching style and is always excited to meet new students and share the joy of music.

Class will include more advanced ensemble building techniques appropriate for age and level in a playful and non-competitive environment. Memorization is encouraged for freedom and depth of experience but music is allowed if needed.
