Computer Programming Basics Using Python*

In this nine-week class participants will learn the fundamentals of computer programming using the Python language. This course is for the complete beginner or someone with slight exposure to programming. Mr. Greer brings a wealth of experience, having worked in IT since 2004. Students will need either a PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer (no Chromebooks) and a reliable internet connection. Class will be held during school vacation, Feb. 18. Limit 10 students.

Beekeeping for Beginners*

This Beekeeping for Beginner course will help get you started in BEES and BEEKEEPING. Topics of discussion will be Langstroth Bee Hives, assembling bee equipment, installing a nuc, feeding the bees, controlling swarming,and dealing with varroa mites. Other topics will be how and when to harvest HONEY, split hives, winterize the bees, and importantly how to minimizeing. There is a $55 materials fee, cash or check only, due to the instructor at the start of the first class. This fee covers the cost of the book, use of the Turner Poulin Union Hall, and membership for one year in the Somerset Beekeepers Club. Assignment of a mentor will b eavailable. Limit 25 students.

Intermediate Programming Using Python*

Join our experience Python programming instructor as he takes you beyond the basics where you will build upon the fundamentals with topics like data structures, intermediate control structures, how to practice coding effectively, and module importation. Problem solving using previously learned fundamentals will be emphasized along with new instructional material. The typical prerequisite is Programming Basics Using Python, but those with adequate experience should feel free to register as well. Students will need either a PC or Mac desktop or laptop computer (no Chromebooks) and a reliable internet connection. Class will be held during school vacation, Feb. 20. Limit 10 students.

Stained Glass*

In this class Beginner students will learn the step-by-step process of Tiffany’s copper foil stained glass design. You will complete a beautiful panel and participate in a field trip on Feb. 20 (during the second class and during school vacation) to the Stained Glass shop in Manchester. By the end of the class you will have gained the fundamental skills to continue a new and beautiful hobby. The kit is $120, and there will be other materials that you will need to purchase, such as glass, which costs about $40-50. For Intermediate students: You will work independently and under the teacher’s watchful eye as you advance your techniques. Lab fee for Intermediate students is $10 payable to the instructor at the start of the first class. If you have been thinking about learning Stained Glass or improving your skill this is your chance! There will be no class on March 20th due to Parent Teacher Conferences. Inclement weather makeup will be April 3 if needed. Limit 10 students.

Pottery: Make a Fun Mug*

Join us for this mug-making class and learn how to create a mug and affix a handle the first night. On the second night, March 12, you will paint your mug. You will be able to pick up your artwork at the Adult Ed Office at Messalonskee on or about March 26. Materials fee is $30 cash or check to the instructor at the start of class to cover the cost of clay, glaze, and firing. Storm dates may affect this schedule. Limit 10 students. 2 Meetings, Feb. 26 AND March 12

Full Course

Rug Braiding*

In this class you will make a 16 X 24" braided rug or table runner. The instructor will supply two pounds of 100% medium weight wool and various braiding tools for you to try during the first class. Each package of wool will contain three colors to use for your rug or table runner and is $10 to the instructor at the start of the first class. If you wish to bring your own wool to class to use, please consider that light or heavy weight wool can create challenges for new rug braiders, but feel free to bring your wool to class and the instructor will help you decided what is right for you. At the end of the first night, students may choose to purchase additional supplies from the instructor, shop locally, or through the internet for items that you need and want. Please wait until after the first class before purchasing additional supplies. The first class you will only need to bring sharp fabric scissors, tape measure, and the materials fee mentioned previously. If you are already a rug braider and have a UFO (unfinished object) to work on, please feel free to join this class. Limit 10 students.

Crochet for All*

Crocheting is fun and easy once you know how. The best part is you can be creative almost anywhere. In this class, beginners willl start by working on a small afghan using single, double, and triple crochet stitches, and you will learn how to begin and end. The intermediate students will be practicing the basic stitches. If you know how to crochet and need guidance with a WIP (Work in Progress) bring it and get advice on finishing, improving, or just join us and have fun. A supply list will be sent via email once enough students are signed up for the class.

For the Afghan, you will need 2 skeins of a light colored yarn of your choiceand a correlating crochet hook. The size of the crochet hook is found on thelabel of the yarn. You will also need scissors, measuring tape, and a yarn needle. Please mark your calendar for a storm makeup on Saturday, April 5.
