Substitute teaching in the public schools can be very rewarding as well as very challenging. In this workshop an experienced and well-respected local substitute teacher will share his knowledge and strategies with those who want to find success as a substitute teacher. Topics will include classroom and behavior management, the substitute survival pack, resources and expectations from local schools, helpful hints to keep any classroom on track, and information about staff conduct, affirmative action and harassment policies. Persons who successfully complete this two-hour workshop will receive a certificate that will be acknowledged by local schools as part of the application packet. Limit 10 students.

The 21st Century Workforce Certificate is based on the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) and industry partner’s collaboration to develop and maintain dynamic models of the foundation and technical competencies that are necessary in economically vital industries and sectors of the American economy. The goal is to promote an understanding of the skill sets and competencies that are essential to educate and train a globally competitive workforce. There are seven foundational competencies that are needed for all professions that are based on the Industry.

•Interpersonal Skills Displaying the skills to work effectively with others from diverse backgrounds.

•Integrity Displaying strong moral principles and work ethic.

•Professionalism Maintaining a professional presence.

•Initiative Demonstrating a commitment to effective job performance by taking action on one’s own and following through to get the job done.

•Dependability and Reliability Displaying responsible behaviors at work.

•Adaptability and Flexibility Displaying the capability to adapt to new, different or changing requirements.

•Lifelong Learning Demonstrating a commitment to self-development and improvement of knowledge and skills.

The WorkReady Certificate is a state-certified skills-building program designed to shape foundational and essential skills for any career field. Maine employers, service-providers, and educators developed the curriculum based on the real skills employers said were foundational to a good employee. Some baseline skills covered are: teamwork, resumes & cover letters, mock interviews, workplace conflict resolution, determining priorities, and knowledge about general business practices. The WorkReady certificate course has been broken into four separate modules of five weeks each. Successful completion of each module will earn the learner a “ticket”. Once the learner has earned all four tickets, they will be issued their certificate. High School Diploma students who participate in all four modules will earn 1.25 elective credits.
