American Sign Language: Part III W18

$59

with Carol Sturtevant

Calendar Feb 7, 2018 at 5 pm, runs for 12 weeks

This class is a continuation of the ASL class offered in the fall of 2017. All material covered in the fall semester will be reviewed and practiced, as new material is added, beginning with the first class of the spring semester. New students are invited to join the class, which is still designed for students who have had little to minimal exposure to ASL and wish to improve and increase their skill level. The course will emphasize the basics of American Sign Language (ASL). A study of the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture will also be emphasized, through the study of culturally appropriate behaviors and the historical aspects of the development and acceptance of ASL as a recognized language. The use of ASL in the classroom will be practiced by students and demonstrated by the instructor throughout the semester. In this way, students will develop beginning conversational skills. Students will be exposed to the following aspects of ASL grammar: basic vocabulary, fingerspelling techniques, numbers, syntax, gestural skills, and grammatical non-manual signals, in order to provide competence in communication, through receptive and expressive readiness activities, as a component of guided communication. A textbook, a workbook, and various DVDs will be used to offer a wide range of vocabulary and cultural aspects of the language. Limit: 10 students. No class Feb. 21, and Apr. 18.
